What to check before applying for financing

The work that determines how an application goes is mostly done before it is submitted. This is a preparation checklist, written as general education rather than advice about any particular product. Go750 does not offer, arrange, or recommend financing.

Read your own credit report first

Get your report from each of the agencies that operate where you live and read all of it. You are looking for accounts you do not recognise, balances that are wrong, defaults that should have dropped off, and an address history that matches reality.

Errors take time to correct, which is the reason to look months ahead of an application rather than days.

Know your own numbers

Total monthly debt commitments, monthly take-home pay, and the ratio between them. Available credit and current balances. Deposit available and where it has been sitting. Having these to hand means you are checking a lender's assessment rather than learning it from them.

Get the paperwork together

Documentation requirements vary, but the common set is stable. Assembling it before you begin removes most of the delay from the process.

  • Recent payslips, or two to three years of accounts if self-employed
  • Tax documents for the same period
  • Several months of bank statements for all main accounts
  • Proof of identity and address history
  • Evidence of the source of any deposit, including gifts

Leave your financial picture still

In the months before an application, avoid changes that are hard to explain: opening or closing accounts, taking new finance, large unexplained transfers between accounts, or a change of employment status if it can reasonably wait.

Assessments favour stability. A quiet few months is an asset.

Understand the product before the price

Whatever you are considering, know the term, whether the rate is fixed or variable and for how long, all fees and when they are payable, what happens at the end of any introductory period, and what overpayment or early repayment rules apply.

Comparing headline rates between products with different structures produces the wrong answer.

Apply deliberately

Use eligibility or soft-search tools where they exist so you can gauge fit without a hard search. When you do apply, apply to your best-fit option rather than several at once, and keep any rate shopping inside a short window.
